Acer Altos Peripherals

CD-ROM - Narrow SCSI Quad Speed

Models Covered

CDU76S

Installation Notes

In addition to the mounting rails and screws provided with the system, you will need a screwdriver.

Unplug the computer and disconnect the cables attached to the back to give yourself more room to work. Do not turn on the power to the computer before completing the entireinstallation process.

Electrical Connectors

The following are located at the rear of the drive. (See Electrical Connectors and Jumpers Figure)

  • GROUND TAB
  • AUDIO LINE OUTPUT CONNECTOR - The audio line output connector is a 4-pin male connector.
  • SCSI CONNECTOR - A 50-pin, male, unshielded, shrouded, keyed SCSI connector is used.
  • TERMINATOR SOCKETS - The terminator sockets are located beneath the SCSI Connector.

Jumper Settings

Set the jumpers on the rear of the drive in accordance with the configuration of your computer system. (See Electrical Connectors and Jumpers Figure below)

The jumpers are preset as illustrated. Removing the jumper from a jumper pin pair disables its corresponding function, and installing the jumper enables it. The recommended jumper for use is AMP Shunts, UAE Short Socket or equivalent

Table 1

The following table shows the function of each pair of jumper pins:

Table 2: Pin Function

Table 2
  • The lower row of pins are ground.
  • ID SELECT, PREVENT/ALLOW, and TEST MODE are recognized only when the power is turned on or SCSI is reset.
  • TEST MODE is reserved for use at the factory only. Do not put a jumper over TEST MODE pins. Doing so may cause an unexpected result

Disk Tray Load/Eject

The CDU76S uses a motorized tray loading mechanism for loading and removing the disc from the drive.

  • MANUAL EJECT - The manual eject button is located on the front bezel. It activates an electrical signal to open and close the tray accordingly. This manual eject is enabled upon power up, but it can be disabled by the host computer  through the Prevent/Allow Media Removal SCSI Command and by PREVENT/ALLOW jumper in the Parity/SCSI ID connector.
  • EMERGENCY EJECT - In case of emergency, the tray is ejectable by pushing a pin into the emergency eject pin hole on the front bezel. Typical Eject Force --  34.3N (3.5kgf) Stroke of Pin Insertion -- 40mm (approximately) Recommended Diameter of Pin -- 1.2mm
  • SOFTWARE LOAD/EJECT - The host computer can load and eject the tray from the drive by a SCSI "START/STOP UNIT" command.
  • AUTO CLOSING - In addition to the operation with the eject button and the software control, the tray shall be automatically closed when it is pushed. Typical stroke and force activating the auto closing of tray is 3mm with a 5.4N (550 gf).

ATTENTION

Your drive installation kit contains parts that allow it to be used with a variety of  Acer Altos systems. Not all parts will be used on all systems. For details about installing drives, refer first to your system's User's Guide.
