Extensa 650

How do I upgrade memory in my Extensa 650 / 655 series notebook?

Main memory on the 650 / 655 series notebooks can be expanded using EDO Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Modules (EDO soDIMMs). These modules currently are available in 8 MB, 16 MB or 32 MB sizes and install in expansion memory slot(s) on the Main Board accessed through the Memory Expansion Door on the bottom of the notebook.

Caution: The EDO soDIMM module option contains components that are sensitive to static electricity. When handling the module and the internal parts of the computer, protect against static electricity by using wrist or ankle grounding straps and grounded working mats. When moving or storing items, use the anti-static bags supplied with the items.

Electrostatically sensitive device precautions

Internal components, especially memory, are vulnerable to damage from static electricity. Ideally, you should use a wrist grounding strap when handling memory modules or other electrostatically sensitive devices.

What to do if you do not have a grounding strap:

If you do not have a grounding strap, you still need to protect your computer and accessories from static electricity. Follow these steps before opening the computer or handling the memory modules.

  • Sit down. Static electricity builds up as you walk around.
  • Touch a large, grounded appliance, for example an external monitor, to discharge static electricity.
  • It is now safe to open the computer or handle the memory modules.

What you will need to upgrade your memory :

  • Small Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Memory upgrade module

The installation process consists of the following steps:

  1. Ensure that the notebook is powered off and the AC adapter disconnected from the AC outlet. Also, ensure that the battery is out of the unit.
  2. Disconnect any peripheral device interface cables from the external interface connectors and remove any installed PCMCIA options.
  3. Turn the notebook over and locate the Expansion Memory Access Cover on the bottom of the notebook.
  4. Remove the screw holding the Expansion Memory Access Cover and remove the cover.
  5. Remove the EDO soDIMM module from its shipping container.
Memory Installation
  1. To install an soDIMM module, first align the connector edge of the memory module with the key in the connector. Insert the edge of the memory module board into the connector using a rocking motion to fully insert the module. Push downward on each side of the memory module until it snaps in place.
  2. If installing a second soDIMM (65x Series only), repeat Step 6.
  3. Reinstall the expansion memory access cover using the screw removed in Step 4.
  4. Replace the keyboard assembly and any components previously removed.
  5. Replace the AC adapter.
  6. Power up the notebook and reboot. If all of the installed memory is not recognized, try reseating the soDIMM module(s) and rebooting.
